Description

Fortifying Your Nonprofit Finance Foundation: Tax Reform, Financial Reporting, & Data Security
Wednesday, November 20 | 1:00 PM-4:30 PM | Harrisburg

Offered in Partnership with: Dauphin County Library System (DCLS)

Sponsored by: APPI Energy, BB&T Bank, JRG Advisors, Maher Duessel, and PNC Institutional Asset Management

For many in the nonprofit world, recent changes to the tax code – not to mention fiduciary responsibilities, protecting financial data, and nonprofit finance in general - have only added to the list of things keeping them up at night and making their hair stand on end. If you are one of the many, do yourself (and your hair!) a favor...join PANO and the Dauphin County Public Library System for Fortifying Your Nonprofit Finance Foundation!

This half-day program will feature networking, learning, lively discussion, and - most importantly - refreshments to keep up your energy. We’ll start with a "crash course" in nonprofit finance basics, including financial reporting and securing financial data, then we’ll shift gears to focus on how recent changes to the tax code have and will continue to impact nonprofits.

Learn from the wisdom in the room. Be part of the wisdom in the room. And stop pulling your hair out over nonprofit financials!

Agenda:

1:00 PM – 1:20 PM | Registration & Networking

1:20 PM – 1:30 PM | Welcome

1:30 PM – 3:00 PM | The Nuts & Bolts of Nonprofit Financial Reporting and IT Security (presented by Shawn Strauss, CPA, CITP, CISA, Manager at Maher Duessel)

Shawn Strauss, CPA, CITP, CISA, a Manager at Maher Duessel will give an overview on nonprofit financial reporting and IT security measures. This presentation will be geared to various level of nonprofit stakeholders including executive directors, finance staff, IT personnel, and board members – particularly IT and Audit Committee Members.

The first half of the presentation will include the basic premise of financial statements including terminology, usage, and relationships between the various numbers in the financial statements. Shawn will conclude this part of the workshop with an important update on the new nonprofit reporting standards and what steps your staff should be taking to address these changes in financial reporting.

The second half of the presentation will focus on cybersecurity threats to nonprofits. With all of the ransomware attacks in the news of late that have impacted nonprofits and governments it is important to ask:

  • Are your organization’s financial assets 100% safeguarded in your current IT system?

Even if you think the answer is yes, you will still want to learn what weaknesses cyber criminals prey upon when targeting nonprofits. You will also learn how you can spot, detect, and respond to these threats before your critical data is compromised.

3:00 PM – 3:15 PM | Networking Break

3:15 PM – 4:30 PM | What does Tax Reform Mean for Nonprofits? (presented by Anne L. Gingerich, Executive Director, PANO)

Nearly two years ago, on Tuesday, December 19, 2017, the House and Senate passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This tax overhaul had – and continues to have – major implications for all 501(c)(3) nonprofits, including reduced charitable giving, no more individual mandate under the ACA, new taxes on certain nonprofit activities, and more. Anne will discuss the changes and how they could impact your organization.

4:30 PM | Adjourn
