Long before “coronavirus” became part of our everyday vernacular, collaboration was a hot topic in the nonprofit sector. Now, months into a global pandemic, it becomes more and more clear every day just how connected we all are. For many, COVID has simply been the nudge they needed to get creative with new ways of working together to support our families, our organizations, and our communities – all while respecting physical distancing guidelines and stay-at-home orders.

Now that COVID has taken that first step, giving us the “pause” we needed to start experimenting, what’s next? What level of partnership is appropriate? With whom are we most aligned? How can we ensure we’ll be stronger together than we are on our own? How do we actually get started?

PANO and United Way of Bradford County are excited to host “Better Together” to bring this conversation to life featuring:

  • A high-level introduction to collaboration, exploring different levels of partnership and what it means to truly work together
  • An honest look at some of the challenges, realities, and successes of real-world collaborations
  • A discussion on the role of trust and vulnerability
  • An overview of important tools, policies, and other documents from the Standards for Excellence
  • Questions to ask before entering and/or walking away from a partnership
  • Opportunities to consider where and how collaboration can strengthen your org and your mission

Agenda:

9:00 AM – 9:15 AM | Welcome & Intros

9:15 AM – 11:00 AM | Community Collaborations: What Does it Really Take? (Anne Gingerich, MSW, Executive Director, PANO)

We together are stronger than any of us on our own. But collaboration doesn’t always come easy – there are values to consider, goals, work styles, and (of course) personalities. Knowing how, when, with whom, and what type of partnership is right for you is a process riddled with questions. In this workshop, we’ll cover the different levels of collaboration, the importance of collaboration for sustainability, and what it takes to build a successful collaboration, including:

  • Trust
  • Vulnerability
  • Policies and other documents to clearly define expectations
  • How to identify promising partnership opportunities as well as when to walk away

This workshop will be rooted in guidance from the Standards for Excellence as well as real-life experiences, drawing from the wisdom in the room to paint a collective picture of what “better together” could look like in Bradford County.

11:00 AM-12:00 PM | Lunch Break (on your own)

12:00-2:00 PM | The “Next Steps” of Collaboration for Northeast PA United Ways
(John Emge, Northeast Regional Engagement Director, United Way Worldwide | Anne Gingerich, MSW, Executive Director, PANO | Kristen Rotz, President of United Way of Pennsylvania and Executive Director of PA 211)

For this portion of the program, Local United Ways (LUWs) are invited to come together to explore what collaboration looks like in their own operations as well as the organizations they support. Through facilitated conversation, a panel discussion, and collective brainstorming, we’ll determine what “better together” means for LUWs, illustrating tangible action steps along the way.

*This portion of the program is open to Local United Ways only. If you are not a staff person at a northeast PA UW, we kindly ask that you attend the morning session only.
