Charities utilizing events to raise funds for their missions have struggled for years to stay compliant with the laws governing fundraising events. Now that in-person events are more difficult, if not impossible, to host, many organizations are transitioning to “virtual” events that involve new or modified legal issues. This webinar will take event planners through a step-by-step review of key legal issues, from initial planning to final reporting. It will discuss both traditional in-person events and a variety of new virtual formats.

Special events or other activities that involve sponsorships, auctions, lotteries, or thank-you gifts must comply with a variety of technical legal requirements in advertising, calculating, and acknowledging the money. This webinar reviews those rules so that charities can meet each of the interlocking requirements.

Nonprofit Issues® editor Don Kramer will be joined by Wendy Epstein, Principal of Epstein Consulting Group, for this in-depth look at the rules that affect your work. Wendy brings more than 30 years of experience in dealing with nonprofit management and fundraising issues and is currently working with several clients on virtual events. Tish Mogan, Standards for Excellence Director at the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations (PANO).

Together, we will cover:

  • Charitable solicitation registration
  • Substantiation and “quid pro quo” acknowledgments
  • Sponsorship rules distinguishing contributions from advertising
  • Unrelated business income tax possibilities
  • Charity auctions and their special rules for valuing contributions
  • Lotteries and sweepstakes in-kind contributions
  • Liquor licenses
  • Copyright issues
  • Privacy issues
  • Release forms
  • Overtime compensation
  • Form 990 reporting
  • and more

Join us for a comprehensive check list of special concerns for your next fundraising effort – some of them may surprise you!

Group Screening:
$150 for PANO Members | $333 for Not-Yet Members

Terms of Participation
If you have 4 or more individuals interested in viewing the webinar, please have one person register selecting the group screening rate, then send a list of all individuals viewing the webinar (including names and email addresses) to christina@pano.org. This option makes the most sense when you have 4 or more individuals interested in viewing the webinar. For fewer than 4 attendees, a single login ticket for each person is the most cost-effective option.
