Congratulations!  You’ve landed yourself a role in nonprofit leadership.  Well…now what?  Whether you’re at the helm, steering the ship as E.D. or C.E.O., or you’re a key member of management team, chances are you’re no stranger to the phrase “trial by fire”.  New leaders and veteran directors alike often find themselves asking the same questions. What does it take to be a “good” leader?  How do I work most effectively with my board of directors?  What’s the best way to rally my troops around a common message?  And what’s all this about collaboration and partnerships? 

This half-day program is your chance to ask these questions and more, learning not only from experts in the field but also from each other – you are all experts in your own right, from the first-time manager to the seasoned pro.  This event will bring together nonprofit professionals in northwest PA to connect, learn, and support each other in becoming stronger, more knowledgeable, and confident leaders.  Our time together will include:

It’s all about relationships! And this statement is never more true than for paid or volunteer leaders of nonprofit organizations. Michael Kumer’s “brain tsunami” will give participants leadership tools, tips, and techniques to use in building relationships with board members, staff, donors, patrons, and other community stakeholders. Conversations will focus on “elements of extraordinary leadership” such as:

• Lead yourself before leading others
• The journey IS the destination
• Spotting opportunities in every challenge
• A new definition of success
• Attitude is everything
• Changing the world as you change yourself

Executive Leaders Cohort – Best Practices in Board Governance: Effective Board/Staff Relationships (Debra Thompson, Strategy Solutions, Inc.)

Truly effective partnerships require a clear definition of the distinctive roles of the partners and the boundaries between them. In the board/staff partnership, a proper division of labor is essential. The violation of the boundaries will, over time, erode the trust, mutual support, and good communications that are essential for any partnership to succeed. Many board members were taught to be board members by the last board they served on and often lack an understanding of how the board/staff relationship should be managed. Many executive directors are reluctant to provide appropriate guidance to the board, fearing they are overstepping their bounds. This workshop is highly interactive and explores “whose job is it?” regarding the various aspects of leading and running a nonprofit based on The Standards for Excellence®, and sets the stage for a practical, candid discussion regarding role clarification for a nonprofit organization. This workshop also covers the role(s) of the board in governance, fundraising, management service volunteerism, and direct service volunteerism. This helps board and staff members recognize which “hat” they are wearing, and how to work together more effectively.

Key Managers Cohort – So You Have an Issue…Now What (Chris Whitlatch, Topanga Partners)

Nonprofits have been faced with a challenging environment of increased needs in contrast with declines in traditional funding. Advocacy and storytelling have become integral to sustainability. Success begins with the ability to craft communications that encourage audiences from board members to internal staff to the general public to get involved and spread key messages. We will look at best practices to improve our advocacy outreach.
